National Strategy for Public Health

In the light of demographic change, the Maltese government is ensuring that its public policy reflects the unprecedented rise of an ageing population. The country’s Ministry for Active Ageing, dedicated specifically to the needs of older persons, published its second active strategy, the “National Strategic Policy for Active Ageing 2023-30”. The lead author of this policy paper is Prof. Marvin Formosa, who also occupies the role of Malta’s country team leader for SHARE. Based on the longitudinal data offered in SHARE, the strategy takes a life course approach to define the individual, social and institutional factors driving a healthy aging process. In particular, the paper formulates measures to expand long-term care services and make them more accessible to the older population in its socio-demographic diversity.
