Migration as a Chance and Challenge to Health Care

In its assessment for the year 2022, the German Council of Experts for Integration and Migration evaluated the role of migrants in the German health care system. The independent scientific committee stressed that immigrant employees are essential to the functioning of the national health system. Simultaneously, it addressed the need to facilitate integration into the labour market and improve working conditions as well as increase health literacy among socioeconomically disadvantaged groups of migrants. The paper uses SHARE data to demonstrate mental health inequalities in the German society: According to SHARE, immigrants manifest depressive symptoms significantly more often than the native population. The mental strain is particularly high for refugees. The council’s assessment shows, that for the considerable contributions migrants make to the German health care system, challenges remain.
