The SHARE BERLIN Institute GmbH (SBI) is the German headquarters of the central coordination of the international survey project Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), the SHARE-European Research Infrastructure Consortium (SHARE-ERIC) and the associated scientific research. The non-profit organisation was founded in 2022 by the Social Science Research Centre Berlin (WZB), the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the German Centre of Gerontology (DZA) with the aim of advancing pioneering interdisciplinary research that combines socio-economic and biomedical approaches with a European perspective.

SHARE is a study founded in 2004 to analyse the impact of health, social, economic and environmental policies on the life course of European citizens and beyond. With more than 160,000 respondents from 28 countries, SHARE is the largest interdisciplinary panel study and one of the largest European research infrastructures in Europe. Through the accredited SHARE Research Data Centre (FDZ-SHARE), SHARE already provides over 20,000 registered users worldwide with internationally comparable socio-economic and biomedical longitudinal microdata for scientific research. Since 2011, SHARE has also had the legal form of a European Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).

We are now seeking a motivated individual to join our team in an international and academically stimulating environment. We are offering an interesting and varied role with the opportunity to make a significant impact.

Head of Finance (f/m/d)

full-time (39 hours per week), to start as soon as possible, initially limited until August 2027 with prospective for contractual renewal.

As Head of Finance, you will take on a key leadership role at the heart of an internationally operating research infrastructure. You will shape the financial strategy, ensure sound governance, and enable the long-term sustainability of one of Europe’s leading social science projects.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the Finance Team, fostering accountability and excellence.
  • Oversee financial controlling, annual accounts, and external audits.
  • Prepare and present the annual financial report to management and stakeholders.
  • Partner with commercial management on financial strategy and planning.
  • Coordinate project budgeting and financial reporting with internal and international teams.
  • Supervise procurement, contract management, and contribution settlements.
  • Manage liquidity, cash flow, and long-term financial stability.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and international accounting standards.
  • Serve as contact for auditors, tax advisors, and public authorities.

Your profile:

  • A university degree in Business Administration or a related technical field, OR equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Interest in being part of a European project; prior work experience in a European or international setting
  • A solid understanding of funding regulations and tax law
  • Team player mentality and openness to work in a flexible team based in different locations, team leadership experience is of advantage
  • Several years of professional experience in managing third-party funding, preferably in research and science, experience with EU grants is of advantage
  • A structured and conscientious work style, with a strong affinity for numbers
  • Excellent English and German language skills
  • Willingness and ability to quickly familiarise with new fields of work and the complex structure of SHARE as a transnational panel study and European research infrastructure
